The young mother said she sees young patients dying. “Why is my dad one of the ones not making it?” one asks Dr. “We love you,” say mothers, fathers, daughters and sons from a video screen. Telling someone that their loved one will not survive is a daily discussion in the ICU. Nurses grab one of the iPads stacked on a counter just outside the praying woman's room so a family can say goodbye on Zoom. A few minutes later, her hands rise and she is praying again. She lifts them high above her head before resting them on her chest. On Friday, a woman fighting to live raises both hands from her ICU bed and prays. “Full code” on the window means, “I want you to still try,” King said of the many who are praying for miracles. "DNR" lets staff know that as this patient’s heart stops beating, that on this day, on this floor, this patient has had enough and does not want to be resuscitated.
